CAPS — Climate Action through Product Sustainability in the Food System
Catalyzing Climate Action Through Food Company Commitments
To keep our planet livable and ensure fair and resilient societies, food systems must transform. Big food companies—often seen as part of the problem—can hypothetically also be part of the solution. Through their vast networks of suppliers and consumers, they have the potential to drive major sustainability shifts. This project explores how food companies’ climate and sustainability commitments can become powerful tools for real change.
Working with five major players in the food sector—two global feed producers and three Swedish retailers—we aim to make corporate climate targets more meaningful and effective. The project focuses on improving how companies measure and report environmental and social impacts, such as emissions, biodiversity, and fairness for farmers. We also examine how sustainability goals can support innovation and learning within companies.
By combining environmental science with business insights, the project will offer practical tools to make corporate sustainability data more reliable and transparent. We’ll also create a dialogue platform to share findings with other food system actors. Ultimately, this research will help food companies not only set better goals—but actually achieve them—driving a just and science-based food system transformation.
